Tapada das Necessidades. 33.2 x 11.4 cm. Gouache and watercolor on paper. Thea McPherson 2023. This is a plein air painting from the artist's sketchbook done while on a trip to the Tapada das Necessidades park in Lisbon, Portugal. The artist lived in Lisbon in 2023 and was inspired by all of the colors and shapes she found in the public gardens there. The Tapada das Necessidades park is on the grounds of a former hermitage and later became gardens that were open only to royalty. Today it is full of crumbling ruins, tropical plants, wild chickens and peacocks. This painting is full of loose expressive marks and bright colors. Tropical plants in bright shades of green overlap in front of pink walls and a warm yellow sky. Large agave and aloe plants mix with trailing vines and twisting trees.

Denmark
Thea McPherson is a professional artist living on a small island in Southern Denmark. She works primarily in watercolor and gouache on paper. Her subject matter focuses on the natural world, especially her garden and the landscapes around her. She enjoys looking for patterns in nature and painting the small details. Thea is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area in California and has lived all over the world. Most recently she spent time in sunny Portugal painting vibrant tropical and succulent plants. She now calls Denmark home and is working on bringing some of the loose expressiveness and experimentation with color that she found in Portugal to the very different Danish flora and color palette she sees around her. Thea's dreamy landscapes are meant to invoke joy and peace. She uses artmaking as a way to notice the beauty around her.
