Small Stylized HORSES HEAD An element from the installation “l’Acqua” / “The Water” ( a flowing stream of horses emerging from the ground, rhythmic repetition of five forms ). Originally realized for the international exhibition “Il Sogno dell Cavallo” / “The Horse’s Dream”, held in the castle at Grosetto, under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy. This installation was subsequently requested and increased in dimension, to create a rhythmic matrix like a flowing river, for the 39th Exhibition of Artistic Ceramics at Castellamonte, Turin. 1999 . The horses have appeared in various subsequent exhibitions in installations of varying form, just as water changes its form when poured from vessel to vessel. “The horses emerge from the ground as though they are crossing a deep river, as though in migration. The head is severely stylized, it could itself be the movement of the water, a ripple, a wave, or have been formed itself by the constant passage of water, just as rock is eroded and smoothed in the bed of a stream or underground in caves. The head is impressed with a faded ancient cuneiform-like script, the horse appears archaic, it carries an information the significance of which has been lost in the mists of time. The eye pierces the head so the horse observes the viewer from beyond, from the depths of time, severely.” Realized in terra-cotta, surface smoothed and waxed. To give stability for outdoor installation the heads are weighted internally with sand. Signed underneath.

I'm an English artist now living in Italy. I grew up in northern England, in Derbyshire. Having artist parents I grew-up being encouraged to observe everything around me. Living in a landscape surrounded by hills I was always curious to see what was on the other side of those hills, beyond those hills were others ; curiosity is an incessant stimulus. I studied art at Manchester Polytechnic, the London College of Printing, and the Royal College of Art. Concluding my studies for some years I worked for periods in studios in Italy and Norway, punctuated by returning to England to make and exhibit my own work, and tuitioring as visiting lecturer at Manchester Polytechnic and Wrexham College of Art & Design. In 1991 I joined the accademic staff at Manchester Metropolitan University, as Lecturer in Ceramics in the department of 3Dimensional Design. However in 1993 I took the decision to leave the post at Manchester to join my companion in Italy. Setting up my own studio I began working and exhibiting in my own right in Italy and abroad. My work is present in various contemporary art museums and pubblic collections and I have realizzed commissions for both organizzations and private clients.
