I wanted to stop buying art materials to make things and make use of discarded material, found objects, items from dumpsters at car body shops: these places offered me free materials with which to work and at the same time these items did not go to landfills. Ii admired Chakaia Booker's work with tires but I like color, so bumpers painted with metallic paints were perfect. Bumpers also were already very sculptural and were highly designed. I could cut them easily with a jigsaw and assemble them with special screws that went in and did not come out (like a fish hook) and the parts could move/swivel. Car parts are significant because the auto industry used to employ many but with robots, they took away many jobs from people. Cars are the biggest contributors to green house gasses and climate change. My work has always been about intimacy, and these bumper pieces speak to the Anthropocene period and people's relationship with Earth.

I used to be a figurative painter but recently decided I couldn’t continue making pretty pictures given what is going on in the world. It’s artists’ responsibility to reflect the times and speak out. Given the overproduction of things, I repurpose plastic car parts, sheet metal, etc., and regularly go to dumpsters. My work is about sustainability, consumerism, robots in industry (with resulting unemployment, inequality, poverty), and climate change, about a society that prioritizes profit with a total disregard for the environment and all life on earth.
