The Aluminium Drawing series is a unique body of work made from Sand Cast Aluminium. Sand-Casting is an ancient process where sand is used to create negative space for molten metal to be cast in. It is still used in industry today to mass produce multiple metal items from chains, car parts to ship anchors. For this series, I used this nominally repetitive casting process to make unique one-off forms, working with the traditional process in an alternative way. By drawing into the sand, with no form to replicate, and the flow of molten metal along drawn lines would determine the outcome. The resulting outcomes are the symbiosis of materials and process which cannot be replicated or reproduced. As a Sculptor I am interested in production, hierarchy, labour, people and objects. In exploring alternative methods of making and training in sculpture, and to question the relevance of the artists hand. The work was produced as part of a Residency at the Foundry at Camberwell School of Art where the process of making were filmed and used for a range of Learning Resources. Made in Aluminium the surface is textured from the sand it was formed in. They are all free-standing and do not require support or stands. The scale of the work makes them ideal to display inside.
