Signed and numbered, limited edition archival pigment print. Printed on Hahnemühle German Etching Paper; 1 inch border, signed on the front, deckled edges. Also available at 40"x60", edition of 3. I began my art career as a painter and multi-media artist before I became a photographer, and I also love to walk. At one point I realized that when you are in a landscape, you are also in a moment – you are not just in the physical space with those particular trees, rocks, and water around you, you are in that place at that particular time with the light, bird, insect, and airplane sounds, the smells of the grasses, the temperature, the movement and energy of geologic forces around you. When we look at a traditional photograph, I believe that our brain’s instinct is to name what we see: “that is a tree,” “that is a sunset” – but when you take that away, when the brain can no longer name the object, it is confused, and in the confusion you strip away the names and are left with the other sensations of the landscape. There is an Inuit word, “sila,” that I think sums up what I am attempting to capture in this work. It has a wide range of meanings: “the world, the universe; nature, the natural order; consciousness; the air, the wind(s), the weather; the space or place outside, the open sky.”

Conot’s work has spanned from oil paintings, to mixed media drawings and paintings, to multimedia installations and sculpture, and on to photography, drawing, and digital collage throughout her career. Her most recent series, “Coalesce”, is another link in this thread that is perhaps the most unusual – photography and sometimes drawing, digitally blended to the point of being unrecognizable, that appears at first glance to be another medium altogether. While she captures most of the images used for her collages in the field, it is in the studio, through music and meditation, that she is able to fully realize their new existence. Conot grew up in Southern California and received her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and attended art school at the University of Colorado. She began experimenting with photography following classes and darkroom membership at the Harvey Milk Photography Center in San Francisco, with the oldest and largest public darkroom west of the Mississippi. Her work can be found in private collections in California, Washington DC, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington state. She has lectured and exhibited her work in group and solo shows throughout San Francisco, Portland, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, and Los Angeles, and currently resides in Portland, Oregon.
