Painting this watercolor portrait of Native American Chief Joseph helped me to understand what the 19th-century photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis has achieved in documenting the disappearing race of courageous people who lost land and traditions to the unstoppable intrusion of foreigners. Chief Joseph was a pacifist leader who tried to maintain a balance of dignity and respect for his people but ultimately lost this plight. In painting his portrait, I discovered his grief and acquiescent wisdom. In adapting to a new reality, hearts are broken, and many fall by the wayside. I have wanted to imprint this state of affairs for everyone to cherish, in tribute to this great man who withstood forces beyond his might with great courage but had to surrender to greater forces to save his people from annihilation. By painting him in watercolors, the medium's fluidity and sharpness define the character of lost dreams. Chief Joseph is a precious part of US history and should be cherished in every home.

After a fashion design career in New York City, I now paint realistic floral watercolors, and realistic portraits in watercolors, pastels, oil on canvas and digitally tinted portraits. What motivates me to paint Native Americans in this new watercolor collection is the beauty of the true personality and character of a magnificent race of ancient people issuing from pre-history and call doing them justice an awesome honor. In my watercolor flower paintings, I am inspired by the exact luscious realism of Dutch Baroque Flower painting traditions that consoled me throughout my lonely years in boarding school, from which I drew solace in experiencing botanic beauty, elegance, luscious generosity, color, and frivolity, in short, in all things that are out of the realm of a strict upbringing. They still provide glorious satisfaction, even if my standards for classical realism still drive me.
