This is an original painting of a cherry blossoms branch, painted with Japanese ink and watercolours on handmade Japanese Hosokawa paper. The paper-making technique dates back to the 17th century, it's one of the oldest papers known and still being produced in Japan. The Hosokawa paper has been recognised in 2014 by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Just like wine AOC in France, papers from different regional of Japan are distinguished by the name of the production area. Hosokawa is made from mulberry tree bark (kozo) and Sunset Hibiscus plant. The Hosokawa paper has a natural pale beige colour, the picture doesn't quite show it. This sakura branch is based on sketches I made on the streets of Kyoto, when cherry trees were in bloom. Cherry blossoms or sakura are a national flower of Japan. They are very popular and highly symbolic, loved and admired in art and poetry. Sakura symbolise the end of winter, spring, new life, and fleeting beauty. Originally from Japan, the cherry blossom viewing has become a popular custom in many countries. It's very romantic. The painting is my tribute to the beauty of spring and lovely cherry blossoms. The painting is signed, sealed, wet-mounted on backing rice paper and ready to be framed or mounted on a silk scroll. Please use acid-free adhesives when framing. It is manually cut, please leave a few mm error margin for dimensions. Please note that small creases may form due to the nature of the papers. Colours may differ due to difference in devices.

Malta
Canadian artist based in Malta. I studied oil painting in the South Studio Atelier in Malta. The Atelier follows the great traditions of the Florence Academy of Art, so do I. The transience of life pushes me to create, to capture the moments of beauty I see all around. I also studied Asian art, in China, Canada, and in Japan. Fragile rice paper gives a different feeling. It's the best canvas to express the complex simplicity of ink painting. I am using centuries-old Japanese recipe to mount my own artwork.
