FACING IT TOGETHER is a Mixed Media landscape on Canvas, made with a flower collage of magazine paper combined with acrylic paint and pastel chalk. Arranged on top of each other in such a way that a deeply layered whole is created. The painting consists of 4 to 5 mixed media layers. The inspiration for this modern mixed media / collage artwork comes from db Waterman's love of exciting psychological thriller series. This love arose in db Waterman's early childhood, when she often watched exciting series together with her father. Children have a natural need to investigate things. Sometimes without thinking. That is part of growing up. It makes them stronger and more self-assured. db Waterman has good memories of her youth, in which there was plenty of room to investigate things, together with friends. The cheerfully coloured collage of flowers symbolises the safe and familiar world of the children. The dark part is meant to represent the dark, unknown and attractive challenge. The inspiration for this technique are the torn posters and peeling paint on old city walls. For many people a sign of neglect and decay, but for db Waterman a source of inspiration.

I assemble original photography, assorted papers, acrylics, oil, charcoal, ink and pencil in my works. The variety of resources I am able to use has proved indispensable to me. The biggest challenge the collage medium posed was its unforgiving lack of transparency. Finding a way to replicate the effects of transparency afforded by paint, especially water colors, was “a large victory” for me . The preparing labor shows through in my collages; layer upon layer of material remains visible in the finished pieces. I believe my body of work is characterized by my skill for reinvention. Having always loved the appearance of weathered walls plastered with peeling paint and old posters, I revive this aesthetic with hopefully a keen and professional eye. The creative objective of my work is to “make something beautiful out of dilapidation.”My tableaus explore the dissonance between old and new materials, intertwined in the most beautiful possible way to create dreamlike and melancholy images.
